Title: Clap Your Hands If You Believe
Song: I'll Try (Jesse McCartney)
Genre: Gen, Friendship, Character Study
Characters: Neal, Peter
Length: 3:39
Clips: used through 3x10
Summary: Neal finds out the hard way that life isn't a fairy tale, but Peter is there to catch him and make him believe again that happy endings exist outside of fairy tales.
Notes: This was made as a request for iamhere23. A huge thanks to jumpfall for the beta.

Additional notes: Working with this song was a lot of fun. For Neal, it seemed to be a story told in reverse. The song starts out with a grown-up disillusioned perspective and then slowly goes back to a childish belief in magic and fairy tales. With Neal, I see it more the other way around: He has this Peter Pan side to him and slowly starts to notice that reality does not guarantee a consequent-free happily ever after. But that interpretation seemed too depressing to me, so I decided to take that part as a back-story and make the vid about Peter helping him renew his faith -– in himself, in his “magic” and even in the possibility that there might be a happy ending for him, too.
So all in all, it is partly a story about disillusionment, but more so, it is a story about hope and friendship and seeing that there are also good things in the world.

Lyrics:

Mozzie: Neal, happily ever after isn't for guys like us.

Sara: Neal, you live in the clouds.

Mozzie: We all grow up.

Hale: All children, 'cept one.

I am not a child now
I can take care of myself
I mustn't let them down now
I mustn't let them see me cry
Cause I'm fine, I'm fine

I'm too tired to listen
I'm too old to believe
All these childish stories
There is no such thing as faith
And trust and pixie dust

My whole world is changing
I don't know where to turn
I can't leave you waiting
But I can't stay and watch this city burn
Watch it burn

'Cause I try
But it's so hard to believe
I try
But I can't see where you see
I try, I try

I try and try to understand
The distance in between
The love I feel, the things I fear
And every single dream

I can finally see it
Now I have to believe
All those precious stories
All the world is made of
Faith, and trust ... and pixie dust

So, I'll try
'Cause I finally believe
I'll try, 'cause I can see where you see

I'll try, I'll try
I'll try ...
To fly

Peter: Let's go talk to him.

Neal: You need me for this? You're uncomfortable around the six-year old.

Peter: I don't speak their language.

Neal: I do?

Peter: Yeah, you do, Peter Pan, c'mon.

it is a story about hope and friendship and seeing that there are also good things in the world.

And that's exactly how it felt, even I'm not familiar with this fandom! :o)
I really loved the song and your vid did absolutely justice to it. It is such an uplifting feeling throughout. Beautiful overlays, great timing, and - as far as I can tell - great clip choice as well. Well done!

Oh, and I meant to say this since christmas: Congrats to being in the final stage at the CJA! :D I knew it! It's not long now until we get the results, I'm sooo curious! LOL

In diesem Sinne ... bis vielleicht/hoffentlich bald! LG Julia

Thank you! I'm so glad this worked even for someone who doesn't know the fandom! :) Somehow, this time, I had some problems with timing, so it's nice to hear it turned out well.

I meant to email you sooner, too (if nothing else on the first, but the day came and went and then it was a little too late. Still: Happy (so very) belated birthday to you! :)
And regarding the CJA: Congrats to you, too *g*. When I heard how many people participated I really didn't think I'd make it, but on the other hand there are a lot of vids that made it into the finalists.

Nicely done! I really enjoyed it. Loved how the emotion flowed throughout, and wow, what a perfect song. :D Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you so much! This song gave me a lot to work with and working with the emotional undertones was very important here and also really fun to do. I'm glad I managed to convey the emotions adequately.

Thank you! Yes, Neal certainly dreams about it, though it's a little bit heartbreaking that Mozzie seemed to be right in "Out of the Box" (well, concerning *that* chance at a happily ever after, at least).

This was wonderful Noiproksa! Thank you so much for doing it. I like how you incorporated so many crucial moments from scenes that I think represent some kind of turning point for Neal in deciding that he can't let Peter and his "new" life behind. The timing, coloring, and overlays are pitch perfect like always in your videos.
I think Peter sees so much potential in Neal. He loves him, and he wants him to see the good in the world. He wants Neal to be happy doing something worthwhile with his life. Neal is slowly understanding this, how he could actually have a "happily ever after" despite everything that's happened to him.

Thank you once again! :) *hugs you*

Aww, thank you! I am so glad you like it! And it was my pleasure, really, so thank you for that wonderful song idea, which inspired me like crazy once I started thinking about it so that I've practically been in a vidding binge since Christmas *g*! I had watched the movie, but somehow I never registered that there was such a Neal-fitting song in there. :)
And yes to all of what you've said! That is exactly what I wanted to get across.

Loved the voice over selections, then segwaying directly into tragedy and other tragic events.Good use of the fireball w/ Adler. Nice direction change with postivie successful cases. Meshing of clips over each other and special events superbly done. Ending with Neal "flying" and Peter's quote very nice. There are two scenes of Neal clapping while tragic events are happening(Hale's dead,Mozzie's shot); it seems contradictory. What am I missing?? Overall, excellent as always!!!

Wow, thanks for the lovely comment and telling me which scenes you liked! I'm always interested in hearing which scenes worked and which didn't.
As for Neal clapping: I was afraid people maybe wouldn't get that. It's supposed to show Neal trying to bring back people from the dead simply by clapping his hands and believing, first Hale, which doesn't work ("there is no such thing... as pixie dust"), and then later on Mozzie, which works ("all the world is made of...pixie dust"). On the one hand, it's an allusion to the Peter Pan tale, where whenever someone says “I don't believe in fairies”, a fairy dies somewhere, and clapping your hands and saying “I believe in fairies” brings them back to life (though it is a more common trope than that: Clap your hands if you believe, though most of the examples focus on the believing part). In this regard, it also shows a (naïve) belief, which is meant metaphorically: Neal is not actually bringing Mozzie back to life by clapping his hands, but his belief in happy endings is strengthened. Hope I could explain what I meant to convey with these scenes. (And thanks for asking, I'm always happy to explain if things are unclear.)

Thanks for the explanation. Hate being dense. Read a background bio about Peter Pan's author, he was really suprised when the audience starting clapping to bring back Tinkerbell, meaning they liked the play and it wasn't a flop. The only clapping hands needed for your vids are the praise!!

Thank you! *blushes* (And you weren't being dense. I once really liked a Stargate Atlantis vid and watched it all the time. And it wasn't until months after I had first watched that vid that one scene suddenly made sense to me which I had never really understood before.)

"Start writing, then, can't wait to read some good WC fic :)"

I don't suppose you could do a special request WC/Western AU vid? (Because, yeah, there is so much footage out there of the two of them wearing cowboy hats. XD)

Yes, you definitely inspire me with your vids, even if I have to imagine up the Western part for myself. ^^

*g* Yeah, lack of fitting costumes would definitely be a problem. And Western AU? Now you really have me intrigued!
(Just as a little joke: Maybe this tiny little treat of the boys behaving in a cowboy-ish manner will help: Western pw: AU)

*flails and gigglefits*

That's hysterical, thank you! ^^ Despite never having seen the movie, I love that theme, and the clips of Neal with the badge/Peter on horseback made me LOL. With your kind permission, I'd love to link to this when I post the story. :D

This a wonderfully done video. I loved how you edited everything and your choice of clips and the voiceovers.

The song fits perfectly.

Thanks so much! I always think about which scenes in canon show (part of) the message I want to convey in a vid, and the voiceovers I chose were just too perfect for the song/message of the vid to not include them. I'm glad they worked for you! :)

I think it's one of the most beautiful White Collar vids I ever seen. Amazing job of choosing scenes! The song is really fit for Neal, and I loved your interpretaion so much. The theme of Neal's "Peter Pan"-ish view of life vs hard reality is really interesting, and I loved Peter is able to support him.

Oh, this is really great! I love the direction you went in the vid, with Peter showing Neal how much good he can do in the world -- basically renewing Neal's faith in himself as a human being, which is one of the things I love about the show. :)

Thank you! Peter showing Neal how much good he can do in the world I'm glad that aspect came across - I almost included another voiceover, when Peter tells him: "Just remember how it felt when you saw that girl in her father's arms", but then I thought showing that scene will have people remembering it, either way. (And it totally is one of my favorite aspects of the show, too!)

Thank you so much! :) And it's nice to hear you liked reading me talk about it, I wasn't sure if people even read that *g*. But I'm with you there, I always find it fascinating to read others talk about vidding, which is why I started adding additional notes, myself.

Oh, thank you! I have been working on my crossfade technique (making them look beautiful instead of simply letting one clip fade into the other) so it's nice to hear that I'm starting to get the hang of it :)

Yeah, sorry about that. Ever since the whole copyright debacle got worse, I always shut down the dl links for my vids within a week or so after posting. Streaming should still work, though.
